Am I too old for braces at 35?

Why one in three of our patients is over 30, and what adult treatment actually looks like.

If you're reading this, you probably grew up when braces meant being a teenager with a metal smile and the patience of a saint. Two things have changed since then. First, the technology has changed. Second, who's wearing braces has changed. The 35-year-old in front of you on the metro might also be three months into Invisalign.

Why so many adults are doing this now

A few things have shifted:

  • Clear aligners exist. Most professional adults wouldn't go through metal braces. Most will go through aligners.
  • Treatment is faster. Self-ligating brackets and aligners often finish a case in 12–18 months, not 3 years.
  • Adults can afford it without parents. No more waiting for permission.
  • Video calls. Two years of staring at your own face on Zoom did something to all of us.
  • Long-term thinking. Crooked teeth tend to get worse with age, not better. Many adults realise if I don't do this now, I'll do it at 50 when it's harder.

What's different about adult treatment

Honestly? Less than you'd think. The biology of moving teeth is the same at 35 as at 15. There are a few practical differences worth knowing:

Treatment can take slightly longer

Adult bone is denser than teenage bone, so teeth move a bit more slowly. A case that would take 18 months in a teen might take 22 months in an adult. Not dramatic, but real.

Existing dental work needs planning around

Crowns, bridges, implants, root canals, these are all manageable, but they affect the treatment plan. We work around them, not through them. Implants in particular don't move, so anything we plan around an implant has to account for it being a fixed point.

Gum health matters more

If you have any gum disease, it has to be controlled before orthodontics starts. Moving teeth in unhealthy gums can cause real problems. We coordinate with your general dentist on this.

Retainers for life

Adult teeth are more prone to slowly drifting back than teenage teeth (which is partly why your teeth might be crowded now even if they were straight as a kid). Retainer wear at night, indefinitely, is non-negotiable.

Why adults often have better outcomes than teenagers

This sounds counterintuitive but it's true:

  • Adults wear their aligners. They paid for them, they want the result, they wear them 22 hours a day. Teenagers… mostly don't.
  • Adults look after their teeth better during treatment. Brushing, flossing around brackets, no eating sugary food while in treatment.
  • Adults show up to appointments. No skipping for football practice.
  • Adults have realistic expectations. They understand it's a long game.

The result is that adult treatment outcomes are often cleaner, finish closer to the planned timeline, and have fewer complications.

What treatment looks like for an adult

For most working professionals coming in for the first time:

  1. Free 30-min consultation. We look at your bite, ask about your concerns, and discuss options.
  2. Records appointment. Digital scans, X-rays, photos, about 45 minutes.
  3. Plan discussion. A week later, we walk you through 1–2 realistic options with timelines and costs.
  4. Treatment fitting. Aligners delivered or braces bonded. About 1 hour.
  5. Monthly visits. 15–30 minutes each. Many patients book during lunch breaks.
  6. Retention. Treatment ends with custom retainers. Worn full-time at first, then nights only, for life.

Most professional adults choose Invisalign so colleagues don't notice. Some choose self-ligating ceramic braces for the cost saving. A few choose lingual when invisibility is non-negotiable.

If you've been thinking about this for years

Most of our adult patients tell us the same thing: I should have done this sooner. Crooked teeth don't get better with age, they slowly drift further out of alignment, become harder to clean, and eventually start affecting the bite. Treatment is straightforward at 35. It's slightly harder at 45. It's harder again at 55.

The free consultation is exactly for this. Come in, get an honest assessment, decide on your own timeline. No one will push you into starting today.

Common questions

What's the oldest age you've treated?+

58. Treatment was straightforward. Invisalign for moderate crowding, finished in 14 months. There's no upper age limit if your gums and existing teeth are healthy.

Can I get Invisalign with crowns or implants?+

Yes. Crowns can be moved with aligners. Implants stay still and we plan around them. The case requires more planning but is completely doable.

Will my teeth stay straight after treatment?+

Only if you wear retainers, for life, at night. Teeth that have been moved want to drift back, and adult teeth drift more easily than teenage teeth. Retainer wear is the difference between a permanent result and a temporary one.

Will my colleagues notice I'm in treatment?+

With Invisalign, almost certainly not. With ceramic braces, only if they look closely. With lingual braces, no one will know unless you tell them. With metal braces, yes.
