Root canal cost in Calicut: single visit, crown, and what is included
The real price of a root canal in Kozhikode, why the crown doubles the bill, and how to spot a quote that leaves the expensive part out.
A tooth that aches at night, hurts with hot drinks, or has a deep cavity usually needs a root canal. The treatment saves the tooth instead of pulling it, which is almost always cheaper in the long run than an implant. But the quoted price is often confusing, because a root canal is two procedures sold as one.
Part one: the root canal itself
The endodontist numbs the tooth, removes the infected nerve from inside it, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. Front teeth have one canal and take about an hour. Molars have three or four canals, sometimes curved, and take longer. That is why the price climbs from front to back.
- Front tooth (incisor, canine) · ₹4,000 to ₹8,000
- Premolar · ₹5,000 to ₹10,000
- Molar · ₹6,000 to ₹12,000
- Re-treatment of an old root canal · ₹8,000 to ₹15,000
Single-visit root canals, where the cleaning and the filling are done in one sitting, are standard now for teeth without a large infection. Two visits are needed when there is an abscess that must settle first. The price is the same either way; the number of visits is a clinical call, not a pricing tier.
Part two: the crown
A root-canal-treated tooth is dry and brittle. A back tooth left without a crown cracks within a few years and is then lost anyway. So for molars and premolars the crown is not optional; it is the second half of the treatment. Front teeth sometimes get away with a filling, if enough tooth is left.
- Metal (PFM, porcelain fused to metal) · ₹5,000 to ₹8,000. Strong, visible metal edge over time.
- Zirconia · ₹9,000 to ₹15,000. Tooth-coloured, strong, no metal. The usual choice now.
- E-max (lithium disilicate) · ₹12,000 to ₹18,000. Best appearance, used for front teeth.
Some teeth also need a post and core (₹2,000 to ₹4,000) to rebuild enough structure to hold the crown. Ask whether that is likely for your tooth before you start.
So the real total is
For a molar: root canal ₹6,000 to ₹12,000, plus a zirconia crown ₹9,000 to ₹15,000, so ₹15,000 to ₹27,000 for the tooth, done properly. A clinic that quotes ₹6,000 for "root canal" is not lying, but it is not telling you about the ₹10,000 that follows.
Root canal versus extraction and implant
Pulling the tooth costs ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 and feels like the cheap option. But a missing molar lets the neighbours tip and the opposite tooth over-erupt, and replacing it with an implant costs ₹30,000 to ₹50,000. A root canal and crown at ₹20,000 keeps your own tooth for decades. Unless the tooth is cracked below the gum or there is no structure left to crown, saving it wins.
Why quotes vary across Kozhikode
- Endodontist versus general dentist. An endodontist (MDS) treats root canals all day, uses magnification, and finds the fourth canal in a molar that a generalist can miss. Missed canals are the main reason root canals fail and need re-treatment.
- Crown lab. Zirconia crowns from a good lab cost the clinic more than crowns from a budget lab, and it shows at the gum line in two years.
- Setting. City-centre and hospital dental departments charge more for rent and overheads, not for a better root canal.
At Smile Align
Two endodontists, Dr. Vaisakh Krishnan S and Dr. Krishna Priya, consult at the clinic in Kunnamangalam, so a painful tooth gets seen quickly and most root canals are finished in a single visit. Crowns are planned with our prosthodontist. We quote in writing after the X-ray, with the root canal and the crown both on the same sheet, so there is no second surprise. If you are about to start braces, we sequence the root canal first so the orthodontic plan is not delayed.
Common questions
How much does a root canal cost in Kozhikode?+
₹4,000 to ₹8,000 for a front tooth and ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 for a molar at a clinic, plus ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 for the crown. Budget ₹15,000 to ₹27,000 for a molar done properly, including a zirconia crown.
Is a root canal painful?+
No. It is done under local anaesthesia and the main thing patients notice is relief, because the nerve that was causing the pain is removed. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Can a root canal be done in one visit?+
Yes, for most teeth without a large abscess. Teeth with active infection need two visits so the infection can settle between them. The price does not change with the number of visits.
Do I really need a crown after a root canal?+
For molars and premolars, yes. The tooth becomes brittle and will crack without one. Front teeth with enough structure left can sometimes be restored with a filling instead; the endodontist will tell you which applies.
How long does a root canal last?+
A well-done root canal with a good crown lasts decades, often for life. Failures are usually due to a missed canal, a delayed crown, or new decay under an old filling, all of which are avoidable.
