Wisdom tooth removal cost in Calicut: what you will actually pay

Simple versus surgical extraction, why the X-ray decides the price, what is included, and when a wisdom tooth can simply be left alone.

Wisdom tooth pain is one of the most common reasons people in Kozhikode search for a dentist in a hurry, often at night, often during exams. The price question comes right after the pain question. Here is the honest version, including the cases where the tooth should stay where it is.

The two kinds of extraction

Simple extraction · ₹2,000 to ₹5,000

The tooth has fully come through the gum and sits straight. The dentist numbs the area, loosens the tooth, and lifts it out. Twenty to thirty minutes, local anaesthesia, back to normal in two or three days.

Surgical extraction · ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

The tooth is impacted: stuck under the gum, tilted into the next tooth, or buried in bone. The surgeon opens the gum, sometimes removes a little bone, often sections the tooth and removes it in pieces, then stitches. Forty-five to ninety minutes. Swelling for three to five days. This is oral surgery and should be done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, not a general dentist with a spare afternoon.

Within the surgical band, the position of the tooth drives the price. A tooth that is partly through the gum sits at the low end. A fully bony impaction close to the nerve canal sits at the top, and may need a CBCT scan first (₹2,500 to ₹4,000) so the surgeon can see exactly where the nerve runs.

What the price should include

  • Examination and the OPG X-ray that shows all four wisdom teeth
  • Local anaesthesia
  • The extraction itself, including sutures for surgical cases
  • A follow-up visit for suture removal or a check, usually at one week
  • A written prescription for pain relief and, where needed, antibiotics

Usually extra: a CBCT scan where the tooth is near the nerve, medicines from the pharmacy, and sedation for very anxious patients (₹5,000 to ₹10,000, rarely needed).

When the tooth can stay

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. A tooth that has come through fully, bites against the tooth above it, and can be cleaned does no harm. Removing it is a cost with no benefit. A good clinic will tell you this. The ones that need to go are the ones that are impacted, partly erupted and repeatedly infected, decayed because nobody can reach them with a brush, or pushing into the tooth in front.

Wisdom teeth and braces

If you are starting orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist will often ask for impacted wisdom teeth to be removed first, so they do not push the newly straightened teeth out of line later. Having the surgeon and the orthodontist in the same clinic means the X-rays are shared and the extraction is timed to the braces plan, not fitted in afterwards.

Why the quote varies between Kozhikode clinics

  1. Who does it. An oral surgeon (MDS) charges more than a general dentist, and for an impacted tooth that is money well spent. Nerve injury from a badly done lower wisdom tooth extraction can be permanent.
  2. Hospital versus clinic. The big hospitals in Kozhikode charge hospital rates, often ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 for the same surgical extraction, because of the setting, not the procedure.
  3. Location. Suburban clinics in Kunnamangalam, Mukkam and Koduvally quote 15 to 25 percent less than the city centre for the same surgeon.

At Smile Align

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Sidharth Manoj, consults at the clinic in Kunnamangalam and does surgical extractions in-clinic under local anaesthesia. We quote after the X-ray, in writing, with everything included. If the tooth can stay, we will tell you that too. Message a photo or your X-ray on WhatsApp and we will tell you which kind of extraction it is likely to be.

Common questions

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in Kozhikode?+

Simple extraction ₹2,000 to ₹5,000; surgical extraction of an impacted tooth ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 at a clinic. Hospital settings charge more for the same procedure. The OPG X-ray tells the dentist which kind you need.

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?+

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthesia and should not hurt. Soreness and swelling afterwards last three to five days for a surgical extraction, two or three days for a simple one, and are managed with standard painkillers.

Can I get my wisdom tooth removed on the same day?+

Often yes for a simple extraction, if there is no active infection. An infected tooth is usually settled with antibiotics first, then removed a few days later. Surgical extractions are scheduled after the X-ray is reviewed.

Do all four wisdom teeth need to come out?+

No. Each tooth is judged on its own. Many people keep two and lose two, and plenty keep all four. A tooth that is through, straight, and cleanable can stay.

Is a general dentist or an oral surgeon better for wisdom teeth?+

For a simple extraction, either. For an impacted lower wisdom tooth near the nerve, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (MDS) is the safer choice. Ask who will be doing the procedure before you book.
